A few weeks ago, Grindr Founder and CEO Joel Simkhai and a group of other Grindr execs visited Austin, Texas, for the great music fest and technology conference known as South by Southwest. While there, a lot of members of the press wanted to talk to us Grindr people about what we’re up to and how Grindr’s growing.
A couple of those articles went to press this week, and we thought they turned out pretty well!

And in our obsessive-compulsive Grindr Googling, we also came across this cool little piece from travel blog Leave Your Daily Hell about how Grindr’s pretty much the perfect travel companion.
It was three years ago that we first launched Grindr, and I would never have imagined that when we started up this little company in my living room, we’d be where we are today. It’s an amazing feeling to travel the world and see people using Grindr in places all over the globe.
We’ve been going strong since March 25, 2009, when we first unleashed Grindr to the world. After one month, we had 10,000 Grindr users. These days, we get nearly 10,000 new Grindr users every day. The rough total tally is now 3.5 million Grindr users in 192 countries internationally (except for the island nations of Nauru and Tuvalu). That’s a whole lot of Grindr guys in a really short amount of time!
Now we’ve got an office full of awesome people who have all been working hard every day to make Grindr the best app around, to innovate and solve issues. We’ve been working together behind the scenes to bring a better Grindr experience to all of our users, regardless of the platform. And as the year progresses, we plan to take some big steps forward in our mission to help gay men around the world connect with those around them.
For now, we just relaunched Grindr.com, so be sure to check that out. Here at Grindr HQ, we spent the past six months adding about 30 new people to our Hollywood-based office. And we still have some open positions.
To wrap it all up, I just want to say that the only reason we’re still here is because of all of you — our users. We’re thrilled that you’re all such passionate and devoted Grindr guys.
So to those of you who have been with us from the start, those of you who just downloaded the app yesterday, and everyone else in between: Thank you all for trying us out, sticking with us, and making this the best and largest gay social app out there.
Happy birthday — here’s to many more!
We know we say it a lot, but it’s worth repeating: Grindr Xtra is the best investment a Grindr guy could make.
The obvious and (if we do say so ourselves) best feature is 300 Guys. That’s 200 more guys on your screen than you get on regular Grindr. Plus, with no banner ads, you get an unobstructed cascade view. Guys and guys, as far as the eye can see! What could be better?
People love the “Block” function on Grindr, so we made the blocking unlimited on Grindr Xtra. See less of the guys you don’t want to see — and more of your favorites.
Grindr Xtra also offers push notification, which will get your Grindr messages to you even while you’re not logged in.
On Grindr Xtra, you can say goodbye to those gray circles for good with Online-Only View. It’s an option that shows you only the guys who are online and ready to chat. With Online-Only View, you’re not wasting precious Grindr space on your mobile device — and precious time — looking at or sending messages to offline or idle users.
There are also a few device-specific features … Saved Phrases saves your slick opening lines or frequently typed answers and allows you to send them on the fly. Quick Menu shows you saved photos, phrases, and active chats and gives you the power to switch from chat to chat and send stuff faster. Cascade Swipe lets you swipe through guys’ profiles without having to go back to the cascade.
Sounds pretty great, huh? So why not optimize your Grindr experience now? Download Grindr Xtra for iOS, Android, or BlackBerry.
